2002 Expy EB gas gauge

2002 Expy EB gas gauge
I just got a new to me 2002 Expy EB 4x4. I filled the tank, re-set the over head message center, and re-set the trip. The message center claimed that I had 380 miles till empty. The message center claims that I'm getting 12.1 mpg and that I have 170 miles till empty. The trip shows that I have driven 187 miles, but I only have barely over a 1/4 tank left. Does the gas gauge go well below the "E" mark or is something wrong with the message center estimates?

The message center adjusted itself when I started it this morning. Said that I had 130 miles till empty. 12 mpg is what I was expecting to get with my style of driving. This is my first tankful since I bought it a week ago. I figured when I put gas in again I would see how accurate it really is, but I was just wondering about others experiences with the gas gauge and message center being accurate.

In order to have the gage and message center reset you must turn the engine off when fueling. The message center is sometimes accurate and sometimes not. That's why many call it the "Lie-O-Meter. I have driven my Navigator 'til it said only 6 miles to empty and it only took 22 gallons to the top, that leaves me a 6 gallon cushion. Just keep accurate records for the first few fill ups and you will know what to expect.
