Tow Package?
The tow rcvr came standard on all X's, and brake controllers are something that individual owners added.
The other mandatory items are a brake controller (I recommend the Prodigy) and a WD hitch with proper WD rated bars and sway control.
The two WD hitches you should look at are:
1) Equal-I-zer BRAND
2) Reese/Draw-tite with Dual Cam (DC)
I had the Draw-tite with 1200# bars and the DC. I towed that trailer to and thru the Rockies and encountered all kinds of terrain and weather on that trip...the load was very predictable and very well controlled. I did spend time at the scales to make sure my load was well balanced...doing this is very easy and inexpensive and insures your load will be well behaved.
You will need 3 weights..all loaded and ready for camping/travel. You will need to get individual axle weights (tandem trailer axle together is okay)
1) Ex loaded and unhitched (i.e. alone)
2) Ex hitched to the trailer but NO WD applied
3) Ex hitched with WD engaged
Weight #1 gives you your baseline axle weights.
Weight #2 will give you your tongue weight. You will spend sometime here tweaking your tongue weight of your trailer. You need to know your total trailer weight which you get from your "combined" weight minus the Ex weight from #1. The rear axle will carry the tongue weight PLUS the UNLOADED weight from the front axle. You will need to SUBTRACT the front axle weight from the rear axle and what is left is your tongue weight. Take your tongue weight and divide it by your TOTAL trailer weight to get your tongue weight percentage...make sure your percentage of tongue weight is 12-13% as this will insure a stable tow. If your tongue percentage is not 12-13%...simply move load around in the trailer to obtain it...keep taking weights until you achieve this goal.
Once you have 12-13% now you can work on your WD in #3. Go across the scales and here you are looking at your FRONT axle weight...if your FRONT axle in #3 is equal to or close (~100#'s) of what it was in #1...you are done...if it is less than in #1 you need to add more WD either thru straight bar pressure or hitch head tilt...tweak your WD until you get your FRONT axle to be equal to #1.
I hope this helps...
If something isn't clear...let me know.
Good luck,
Joe.
Hemi guy gave one of the best explanations I've seen on a board in a long time.
I like my sway bar setup also, especially when pulling the 30' trailer in these Texas winds
