good day all, usually dont post here as i hang out in the slick 60's site but i have a problem, it seems that in the 85 -86 f-150's the fuel tank senders have been discontinued and are obsolete. both tanks on my 86 f-150 have quit working and i have had no luck in finding one from the ford dealer here and the parts houses. does anybody here have any insite in this area and can the tanks from a 80-84 be installed with out to much fabbing. maybe Number dummy can give some insite as to if there are any senders in the country. would rather do just the senders instead of the whole tank. but i can prolly pick up some tanks at a boneyard cheaper than the senders new. thanks in advance. Randy
Hey you too? I just bought one (sending unit) on e bay for 44.00 having it installed on wed.(shop wanted 200.) ebay is a great source for parts. new and used... I have an 84 f150, so I am spending a great deal of time searching for parts too. just go the auto parts section, put in the make, model, and 1980-85, and all sorts of parts come up. you can then select any certain part you are looking for. some OEM, but most aftermarket...so if you are ford only, be aware... vic
You can find the whole assembly (sending unit with fuel pump attached) at pretty much any parts store. They run about $130.00 what I've seen. Bought mine at Auto Zone and have been pretty happy with it.
I purchased my sending unit from LMC for around $85.00. They are $69 plus shipping. I purchased my new tank from Advance Auto because if you plan on getting a tank from the bone yard, you are going to be very disappointed. They are all going to either be rusted out around the seams or in fairly bad shape. At least that is what I seem to have experienced. Anyway, a new tank is only $99 bucks!
You should be able to get any sending unit for an 80 to 86 from LMC with no issues.
What engine does your truck have, and is it EFI or carbed? In general if carbed, components from earlier 80s carbed trucks should work. But if your truck is EFI, your used part availabilty will be limited, and earlier stuff can't be easily fabbed. I also used LMC for an in-tank EFI sending unit. What was good about them was the sending unit was available with and without the in-tank pump.
mine is carbed, 300 - 6 cyl. near as i can tell, they only built these tanks in 85,86. as the 84's and lower years are smaller mounting holes. and 87 are intank fuel pumps which mine are not. i did find one at Green sales. so thanks a lot guys. dutch
I put one in my 85 f150 4x4 side tank wasen't to bad to install but tank was empty.
Got mine from L.M.C i wish i would of straightened out the rod the float is on a little it took
10 gal to start to register on the gauge and when full it doesn't make it to F mark. So i have a big reserve when on E.
