4.0L engine flush cleaner???

My sisiter has a 10-15 yr old 4x4 Ranger with a 4.0L. The oil has not been changed in several years. Recently it has started "tapping"( 3 qts low). I haven't heard it so I don't know if it's a rod or lifter. "SOmeone" told her it needs an oil pump. Their budget is SEVERLY limited(virtually nonexistant). I thought about changing the oil and filter 4-5 times in 1 day with a good warmup in between changes. DOes anyone have any ideas? ALso is it possible to drop the oil pan and replace the pump without pulling the engine?

1st, i would change the oil/filter, then check for noises, if no diagnostics were done on the oil pump, then if you had any doubts, connect a mechanical gauge in place of the electric sending unit, check it..it's probably ok. I would avoid flushes at this point (since if there is a crud buildup it could easily break a chunk loose and cause real problems), just check the oil weekly for level, visual cleanliness and change the oil as needed.
