Another mileage thread. Comparing different trucks with different drivers in different locations in different weather conditions at different times is impossible.
The OP should buy something like a ScanGauge II. After calibrating the MPG features, set it up to show the average MPG per tankful along with instant mileage. Then, try driving to maximize MPG. I guarantee the guys who complain about low MPG compared to other drivers have absolutely now idea of what is required to squeeze more miles out of a tank of fuel.
Nobody knows how to drive economically unless they learn. You can't learn unless you can monitor how much fuel you are using real time. Drive carefully to 30 miles. Note your average MPG. Floor the truck from 0 -60 once and watch the average drop. Then, see how hard you have to work trying to nudge your tank average back up after that 10 second blast.
With a 4.10 rear , On the highway keeping it under 2000 rpm's (not towing) I usually see between 16.5 to 18.5 mpg . While towing our 13k 5th wheel it varies to 10.5 to 12 mpg.
Unloaded city averages 14 to 15.5.
I was waiting for that, I was going to say the same, I have a dually 4.10's and see the same mileage. and yes I can agree you. keep it around 2k rpms you'll get into the mileage sweet spot, any higher your mpg's drop. I have yet to tow my 35ft travel trailer but I expect to see around 10 mpg's
I was thinking he was alluding to pulling sediment off the bottom of tank and fouling injectors but it would have to pass thru two filters..so not sure.
i see about 14.5 on a good day going down hill with the truck in N and the wind pushing me down the hill. i have seen it up to 18 before my 35's and im def dropping back down to smaller tires when these are done
Ok.. I have read all these post of guys getting 20MPG ... I have to think that there is something wrong with my truck... At 65MPH I'm lucky if I see 14-14.8 MPG steady cruise on highway... In the city 10MPG .... At any highway speed over 75MPH the mileage drops into the 12MPG range.....Is this normal.. I run Diesel kleen in every tank full... keep it well maintained... Its a 2005 F350 ,DRW(4.10) ,Auto, CC with a leer high cap... These are MPG unloaded...
Thoughts??
Syn 5w-40 engine oil.
Syn in the differentials.
Custom tuning, SCT.
FICM tuning.
Egr delete or block, bock the up-pipe and cut the scoop out if you do not want to remove the egr cooler.
Clean the intake manifold because of the build up the egr system produces.
Street friendly tires.
Cat and muffler delete pipes to keep more low end TQ. 4" or 5" systems will give you higher rpm TQ. Lower rpm power is where the mpg is.
How many miles?
Another option is to buy the powermax turbo, BUT!!!...
If you turbo is still good or it just needs to be cleaned do not buy it just for mpg... Do it to replace your turbo. It would be wasteful to spend ~1,500 on a turbo just for mpg even though the stock turbo is still alive. The powermax is less restrictive compared to the stock, that is why it helps mpg a little.
