Have owned our 2005 Escape XLS since new and each winter I get ticked when ever I drive it for over 45 min. The heat is either all hot or blowing cold. Had dealer check it many times under war. They tell me the blend door gets moved by fan speed and air movement at highway speeds.
I find it hard to believe I am the only owner with this issue? Went on a 230 mile trip again last week, outside temp about 10F. With five of us in the car you need the fan on 3 to keep from fogging windows and we were either boiling hot or cold.
You can feel the resistance in the temp control **** as you turn it colder click by click, temp stays same then over the hump it goes and you get cold air.
Only seems to be an issue at highway speeds and or opperation of 45 min. or longer drive.
I had not had a problem like this, but I got curious and looked around. Check out this link at another site concerning blend doors and big temperature swings and frustrations. http://www.escape-city.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4737
It looks like each of those blend doors has an actuator on it. I would have thought it was some kind of vacuum line leak, but it looks like electric devices do it, and sometimes break.
For the fogging issue make certain that you have the heater **** set on one of the settings that includes "defrost". The defroster also dehumidifies the inside air.
2005 Escapes blend door may still have been vacuum operated, can't say for sure, but my 2003 is vacuum operated. Not enough vacuum to keep door in one place, could have leak, surprised Ford service couldn't pinpoint the problem and fix it. That's not how it is suppose to work, Ford just gave you the run around.
Thanks for the quick replies. I have complained more than once, apparently my dealer did not want to look into it. Sounds like my inlet blend door accuator is weak.
