I've installed an ignitor II and a flamethrower II coil in my 65. I've searched the forum and found a lot of info concerning bypassing the pink wire to the coil, but in addition to the pink wire I also have a black wire from a small cylinder shaped object mounted on the valve cover to the pos. terminal on the coil. This is probably a dumb question but can somebody tell me what this cylinder is and do I need to keep it connected to the coil with the ignitor II.
Also if I understand the previous threads I need to splice into the pink wire behind the ignition and run a new wire to the coil?
I beleive the cylinder shaped object is called a ballast resistor. I installed the ignitor III and the flamethrower III coil in my 65, and the instructions for the coil said to remove the resistor. The flamethrower II may be different. Merry Christmas.
Just one wire on it? Don't matter the size than as it's a condenser. In the old days to remove radio noise we would put them on all motors like heater, wiper, fans. And alt or generator as well. Works well for getting the noise out of a CB radio too.
My AM radio is out of the truck for repair, but when I reinstall it I would like it to sound good so I guess I'd better hook that condenser back up to the coil.
I did not do any rewiring of existing wires. I just connected the leads from the ignitor to the appropriate terminals in the coil. Mine works great.
I did it that way also but the truck won't start. It will start if I connect the red wire directly to the battery, but I'd rather get it wired correctly. Are you using the ignitor I or ignitor II?
I just looked at my truck, and I have one red wire (existing) from the ign sw to the pos. lead on the coil. The red wire from the ignitor goes to the pos., and the black wire to the neg. With the key on, you should have 12v at the coil.
Thanks for checking KO1960. On the red wire from the ignition, just prior to the coil do you have a hard plastic "elbow" in the line or has that been removed?
black from ignitor to (-) coil
red from ignitor to (+) coil
original red ignition wire to (+)
Ignitor II, III
black the same
red the same
Bypass resistor wire by reaching under dash and unplugging in. Nice and neat. The resistor wire and the 2" ignition switch wire have a male-female plug. Get a 12 gauge insulated wire, put the correct end on it and plug into the 2" switch wire. Run the other end through a firewall grommet to (+) coil and put the correct round terminal on it for the coil. I used a 12 gauge insulated wire simply for safety in carrying the 12V to the coil.
Now if a PO butchered your wiring then you might have to tap into the resistor wire near the beginning if they changed the original ignition switch out.
