hey guys I got a 1978 f250 with the factory 460 and ford carb, Ive had this truck sitting for quite a while and yesterday I started it up and it didn't run very good. I know the carb needs to be adjusted or possibly rebuilt but I just don't know where to start with these things, I want to tackle the carb myself the question is what should I look for and any refrence material you all can post would be great heres some more info
* truck starts but wont stay running unless my foot is on the gas.
* when the truck was running last summer it would idle but as soon as it was put in gear it would die, unless I gassed it
* the butterfly valve is not functioning it is broken but looks as though it will work again if I could find a small nut to screw the actuating arm back on to the threaded post that it is suppossed to attach to.
* not sure this is carb or not but the truck blows white smoke when running, not huge clouds of it but enough to notice also it is comming out the valve cover im not sure if this is because worn rings or valve seats or just a malfunctioning pcv system (not hooked up)
any help is allways greatly appreciated. thanks
I assume that the white smoke is evident even after the rig is warmed up and not just condensation. Constant white exhaust gas is indicative of coolant/water in the combustion chamber. If it were blue, then valve seals, rings, or PCV issues.
I'd rebuild the carb simply to eliminate it from the mix of what can go wrong. It's better to know what works versus the myriad of what may not.
