Getting ready for the Christmas snowstorm we may be getting, I was trying to get my 4x4 engaged in my '97 F250. I lubed the pivot points from below and was exercising it with the selector. I got it to engage and disengage a couple times but it ended up stuck in 4L.
I pushed on it and it ended up just flopping around. It is in 4L and fortunately it is in my driveway and I can drive it. I looked underneath and it looks like the shifter assembly separated from the t-case.
I ran out of time to work on it but I have tomorrow off so am hoping to get whatever parts I may need and get it back together before the big storm on Sunday/Monday.
Any thoughts where I should start and what are the best case/worst case scenarios?
I did some more searching and looks like this isn't an uncommon problem. Going to get it into the garage tomorrow and try to take it apart. Hopefully it cooperates somewhat but if it is like anything else on this truck, it will be a SOB. But, maybe I will try to manually get the t-case into 4H to at least get me through any snow storms.
Still want to hear ideas, suggestions and tips though.
i had the same problem with my truck, it was the bracket that holds the shifter to body or transfer case. i believe it cost me 119$ from ford (dealer only part). its a week point because you have to push down on the shifter to get it into 4 low( but there is a way to mod. to so you dont have to). but you can just pull the linkage on the transfer case to get it out of 4l, just put your e brake on and your tranny in NUT. first to make it easier. but hey at least you have 4x4... my front diff just crapped out on me and no time to fix it before the storm (snow blower repairs, christmas shopping and so on)
I broke the selector lever just below where it attached to the tranny. Found the replacement part on Rockauto for $145. Won't have it in before the snow flies but will at least be able to use the truck in 4x4. Front u-joints are a bit stiff but what else is new?
16-22" of heavy wet snow coming here. Hoping I don't get called in to work....even double time tomorrow won't make it worth it.
