got a recall for my wifes 2002 windstar. i understand they are cracking or completly breaking.
so i called ford dealer here to book appointment, he says they got to keep it over nite.
I asked why, he said if there are no cracks in the axle they will glue a patch on it.
wtf is that all about?
i don,t think gluing the thing is going to be a very safe fix.
what do you,s think?
I heard about this on the news last night,I have to agree with you, doesn't sound like a good fix to me,if it were me I would be looking for a different vehicle for the wife to drive!!
Perhaps the service manager was talking in too elementary a manner. Usually fixes sounding like this entail bolting/welding/riveting a metal reinforcement plate in place.
It is possible they really will glue a patch(reinforcement) into place, don't let the word worry you. Almost all modern aircraft are "glued" together. Many of the structural members of the fighters and I think almost all parts on the Boeing Dreamliner are "Glued" together.
So don't let the word glue get to you. But, I would bet the repair is more than a glued in place patch. A vehicle with many miles on it is probably too dirty for glue to be a good method of fastening on a "Patch"
Ask the manager what he really means. Most will tell you.
I also remember the news saying that a certain number of these axles will have to be built. This is all predicated on how many of these vans are actually still in service.
I'm not so sure that I would be ok with a patch either.
well went ford dealer, sure enough they are going to glue a patch on the axle.
she likes to call it "jb weld". what a cheesey repair
i am not impressed with this repair at all.
i hope the axle is cracked so they can give me a rental untill the get a new axle
