Injector noise??

6.0 50K miles, shop replaced stc fitting October fixed no start hot. Now when cold to warm ticking sound under slight acceleration goes away when up to temp for the most part. Sound like a gas engine lifter noise. Have not had exerience with valve train on these. Question do injectors failing sound like what I described? No noise at Idle so can't pin point the noise under the hood. Where do start?

Sometimes a noise like that can be an exhaust manifold leak. It stops when the manifold gets hot and expands. Just a possibility.

Ya thought about exhaust but seems like it would be more prononced when cold and can't really isolate to that. Can't isolate anything while it's setting still. Dam I can't ride around under the hood while driving and it seems like the only time you can really hear it is while driving just looking to see if anyone has had this symptom and solved it so I have a place to start.

You could try looking around the exhaust manifolds & up pipes for soot marks.

ya replacing the STC fitting they had the turbo off so maybe exhaust just hope it not the piston slap thing I have read in other places. Thought it may be related to the repair maybe causing one of the injectors to get something in it or damaged from air. anyone do any reading on this piston slap issue and what those symtoms are? Running the engine at a constant 1500 RPM stiiting in driveway seems to fill like it might be a little rough like one cylinder might be off.

piston slap should go away when the engine is warm. we have seen a few lifters come apart and take out the engine before.

Cheezit wished you were around to listen to. Does pretty much go away after warm but still can hear it if you listen real close allthough its quiter. Is piston slap prevelant with these? If a lifter would this get quiter after warm? and how do I track it down?

Does it ring a bell if it wasn't there before replacing the STC fitting what could be connection if any? Thanks

never heard a 6.0 with a piston slap issue. the fact that they are 17:1 or so compression your gonna have a little bit clattering.

the sound comming and going could be from a roller that has hung up and then started working again.

to try and track it you can maybe get lucky by watching the valve train moving with the valve covers off.

if you think its injector or piston related then just upplug or cancle the injectors one at a time and see if it has any effect.

Only problem can't hear it at idle strickly on a light to meduim acceleration after already rolling. Makes it real hard to pinpoint it

This seems to match but right after they replaced the STC fitting? Starts go hot. Could I have a cracked branch tube?

Metal Tapping Noise from Rear of Engine:
Excursions built after 1-10-05 and 2005/06 F-SuperDuty may have a metal tapping noise from the rear of the engine on decel or light acceleration, or under loads when the high oil pressure is at higher levels. This may be due to a damaged/improperly fitting HP oil pump output quick connect fitting. To diagnose, you will need a scan tool with active command capability. Command the IRP duty cycle to 45% and listen at the high pressure oil pump cover with a stethescope as the engine speed is increased to 2800 RPM. If the noise is louder on the pump cover than on other parts of the engine, the pump cover will need to come off to inspect and replace the fitting. Broadcast Message 5511.

Have you installed the "Blue spring " in your fuel regulator and changed your fuel filters lately?

I done the blue spring update. The fuel filter has about 4000 miles on it. I am using motorcraft diesel oil and motorcraft filters. It is only noisy when cold an acceleration.

Try adding some two stroke oil in your tank and see if that quiets the sound. it may help to if the sound decrease to help find where the noise is coming from.
