Just put in a new cam and i want to set up my dist. Ive got initial at 14 degrees and closed off vacuum advance can.The can is adjustable. it makes power doesnt ping under load but i think theres more in there. Whats the best way to do this. I dont have a lot of tools so ive got to rely on eyes and ears.I do have a timing light though. The motor is a 390 with basic upgrades.New cam is a xe256 from comp.

1. Remove #1 spark plug. Turn crank with socket wrench until you know FOR SURE the timing marks are coming up to TDC on COMPRESSION STROKE, not EXHAUST STROKE. Put long screwdriver blade into plug hole, touching piston top, contionue to turn VERY SLOWLY until plade JUST STOPS going upward; watch it very closely, bring "0-Degrees" mark to timing pointer.
2. Check location of rotor in distributor-- it should closely line up with the #1 electrode in the cap, as you hold cap above distributor. If one of the old, transparent plastic caps can be found, hang onto it forever to use for this purpose. If unsure, cut the top out of an old cap. FE engines will run fairly acceptable with dist. gear 1 tooth off in DIRECTION of rotor rotation, but not the opposite way. This step ensures proper insertion of distributor.
3. Use timing light to set initial advance with no vacuum at idle speed. Tighten hold-down clamp, use light to verify that spark advances when throttle is "blipped" open to perhaps 1500-2000 rpm. See if this procedure helps any.
Gee impish he's pass the point of point of finding #1 cyl. he's got it running.
I think your at the old adjust a test drive point now. Then keep tinkering and you'll find the happy medium your looking for. Unless you do a little carb re-jetting. Maybe open plug gap some an index them also.. other things to do but wont get in to that now..
orich
yeah , its running and making power i want to fine tune dist.ive opened up plugs to .040, plugged vacuum advance, running 70 jets. its not pinging under load im just expecting a litle more than im getting.I know its a mild cam and i can tell a difference but not a whole lot.initial is at 14.
