gas gauge difference??

hey guys, i haven't made many (or any?) posts on here, but i've perused the forums for a long time, and i really like this site. anyways, on to my problem.......
i have myself a '79 f-150, 351M. the cab on it now is from a camper/trailer special (whichever it is) truck. my question is this: is there a possibility that the gas gauge could be way off, since i have a 19GAL tank, and the camper/trailer trucks had different size tanks? it does work, everything tests out ok, pulsing test light at the sending unit, pegged gauge when shorted, etc... i can put close to $40 in it, but it only goes up to about 3/8 of a tank.

prolly gonna tear the sending unit out and do a resistance check today

well, pulled out the sending unit (which is brand new, including the gas tank), and the resistance seemed fine. even set the float, crawled out and checked... and the gauge seemed to work perfect!! truck is almost outta gas, but that still doesn't explain why 12 gallons doesn't give a 19GAL tank even 1/2 a tank... anyone have an idea...??

The Gauges are virtually identical with a few different cosmetic features, (Unleaded Fuel Only) markings etc...

The difference is in the sending unit. If someone put in the wrong sending unit, that could explain the discrepency.

The sending unit can also be defective.

yeah, that makes sense. i was hoping that would be the answer, but oh well. i just bend the float rod a little, since it was a quarter tank off. i guess i'll see where it sits when i fill er up...

Be careful doing that.

It's better for your gauge to read 3/4 tank when full than 1/4 of a tank when empty.
