96 302 engine swap

Hi I was wondering what years I can swap with my 96 302 out of my F150 without having too much headache. I plan on using all stock intake plenum and accessories. Thanks for your time.

No, the roller cam came earlier on the 302, 94-96 would be for the 351. As for 302 engines, you can use one from the 92 on, if memory don't fail.

So I've been looking on craigslist and some of these 5.0 engines they are selling are being callled roller blocks. Mainly out of early nineties mustangs. Is that what I need to keep my eyes open for? Also couldn't I just use any 302 and swap out the cam or is there mods that have to be made in order to do that?

Yes but the earlier truck roller cams were smaller and therefore less desirable.
All 302 blocks from '87 on are roller ready so a roller cam could be swapped in. Mustang motors had a roller cam as far back as 1985 but you don't want anything earlier than an '87 because the earlier heads were junk. The Mustangs also got a larger cam than the trucks ever did so that motor will make more power too.

If you get anything except another '96 truck motor it will have to be stripped to the bare longblock and all external components from your '96 bolted on, that includes the timimg cover and water pump, intake, crank balancer, and all accessory brackets, and that is because the '96 truck has more sensors on it than previous motors.

Thanks guys! That is exactly what I needed to know. So I think I will keep my eyes open for a nice mustang longblock and just bolt all of my externals on it. Anything else I need to look out for?
