how do I get these u-joints apart? I tried bashing'em apart
with a hammer and a 1/2 extension piece. Do I Have to use some special trick or just a bigger hammer? Ive taken the snap rings out, I dont see why my hammer isn't getting the job done.
I have removed them by putting a larger diameter socket (big enough so that the cap will slide into) under the yoke or drive shaft and taking a smaller diameter socket (small enough to slide through the yoke hole) and tapping with a hammer. I don't recall it taking a lot of force to get it moving. May help you to have someone help in holding everything to keep it all aligned.
It helps to soak with WD-40, use the socket method above, and squeeze it in a vise.
I have had BII UJs on axle shafts that required me breaking out the balljoint kit and impact wrench.
On some all I did was start to bend the ears. So, I swallowed my pride and took it to a machine shop with the right plates and 40 tons of pressure
On ones with very rusty ears with 3/4 circle clip retainers, sometimes the ear has become slightly deformed and has rust welded solid. Hammer usually does not work on these, you have to press them out one way or another.
