I bought some door panels off a guy parting a truck out a month ago and finally went to install them today. Well, found out I got the wrong frickin' color. These are the pumpkin color ones and I guess I need a more brownish color. Anyone have any interest in these? I'd like to trade them for the correct color door panels in like condition for my '81.
These are slide locks with manual windows, in pretty nice condition. The top on the panels are faded and chalky, the driver's side is worse than the passenger side. The drivers side also needs a replacement weather strip. Otherwise the face of the panels are clean, could use a good cleaning.
In the pic, the one without the chrome trim is what I'd like to trade and the other is the color I need. Would have to be manual windows, don't care if they're slide or manual locks. If anyone is interested, I'll post better pics tomorrow. Thanks.
Hope this is okay in here ctubutis... wasn't sure how much attention this would get in the classifieds section.
SEM makes a spray bomb interior color coat product that will match factory colors, is super easy to apply, and dries to an almost completely mistake free finish. I recommend you find some of that online or in a local body supply store. It's also relatively inexpensive...last time I bought some I think it was around $11 per can. One can will do the door panels and quite a bit more.
Probably would be my last ditch effort if I can't find some OEM panels. I've never had good luck spraying panels as they never seem to hold up over time. If anyone has some testimony and pics for this product I'd appreciate it. Would especially like to hear how it holds up to daily use over time. Thanks.
Don't take just my word for it, plenty of guys on here will tell you how good the stuff is. My interior is still spotless after 4 years. There are plenty of pics in my gallery. And it goes on so easily and dries so neatly you have to purposely try to mess the job up. I've seen runs dry right out of the stuff.
That is my plan also, I have the tan ones. I figure I will go ahead air compressor them wash them with water ac them again, and then either roll on the stuff or get it in aerosolized cans.
Look at the safety certfication lable located on the drivers side "B" pillar just below the door striker bolt. Look at the body code and post the code. Should be a three space code. The middle digit is the interior color.
There were only two brownish colors in 1981.
Code T: Nutmeg: What is pictured in the post.
Code U: Fawn: A sort of cream color almost like tan.
Also there is an engineering number stamped on the back of the panels. If you could post those. Specificly I need the last three digits on each panel.
Both of these panels look to be the same color. But the one with the chrome trim has color shifted to a darker color due to sun damage. This is actually quite comon with nutmeg. My armrests were shifted to a darker brown due to sun damage.

You are my hero today. Body code is CT4, so it is nutmeg. I reinstalled the old panel yesterday, so I don't have the number for those at the moment. The pair I bought is EOTB-1023890 BW. They still have their production date stamp, Dec. 17, 1979, which is slightly amusing. I wish I still had the guys number to know if he still had the truck. I would of grabbed the dash shell and pillar trims if I had known how far off the colors were. I've only run across two trucks with the nutmeg interior, the one I got the panels from and one in a JY a few years back. Does anyone know offhand if the SEM paint comes in this color? Thanks guys, you're the best!
I never had any luck w the vinal dye for a daily driver. An occasional weekend user maybe. Works on everything but the door panels, carpet and seat, just rubs off of those
I've never had luck with the seat either, and that was using sem products.
The dash and door panels I've had good luck with them, if the panels are not too far gone and not crumbly.
I've heard you can special order SEM colors, and that they can Mix Nutmeg into a can. I do not know how or who did it though. Maybe that person will chime in?

I was thinking about dying my plastic interior roof pillar trim and behind the seat plastic trim from red to black. How well will the SEM hold up to those areas? I have almost given up trying to find a black interior.

Those will be fine. It all comes down to wear. If it is constntly being rubbed(seat, carpet, door panels) you well wear thru it, or just wear it off
