Its running....again!

Hi, some of you may of read about my new rebuild and the fact that the distributor gear vaporized and ruined my camshaft....

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...threadid=98129

Anyway, NAPA paid the full bill for replacement parts and labor to rebuild the rebuild and I got it back last week. I wanted to drive it a couple of days to make sure but it appears that it is FINALLY right!

It never did run right before but now its great! I can pull any hill in 4th gear (4 spd manual 4:11 rear end) and it almost jumps up in the air when i floor it in 3rd gear. It sounds strong and smooth, starts like dream and pulls so hard and so low its incredible. I think I can pull that pin out that tractors can't !!

Well now Im excited about getting the horse trailer ready...I need some suspension work and I have to figure out how this brake box thingy hooks up !! Thank goodness Spring is in site!

Many, many many thanks once again to everyone on here who helped me see this thru!!!

What camshaft did you end up putting in that motor?

Bill

I don't have spec card with me but it was almost identical to the Edelbrock 2172 performer one. I'm still debating adding the Edelbrock intake and carb this summer.

So you're using the stock carb & manifold with flat top pistons and an E'Brock Performer Cam clone. Any other modifications? Block decked? Heads shaved? Any porting or polishing? Headers?

I got the flat top pistons because

a) it appeared to me it was something I could add relativly cheaply to the rebuild but would bring more benefit later as I did "bolt on " mods to the motor...i e the intake and carb

b) Everybody seemed to want them !!

I throw my newbie self at your feet and ask for guidance and forgiveness!

My heads were completly rebuilt (with the 3 angle grind) and all new parts...stock specs except the springs had to accomadate the greater that .5 lift on the cam.

The machine shop said I had 9:1 compression now. I have to run high test or it pings like crazy. There is still some discussion as to wether "tuning" will help.. I dont mind...its a mpg/cost tradeoff in my book.

I thought I might stick with the stock 2150 carb just for avoidance of problems but Im still thinking about that.

My needs are a dependable driver and some light towing and I just love that Model\YR and I finally found myself in the position to buy myself a little toy.

If there is anything I am doing seriously bad please please tell me so I can fix it!

I wasn't trying to say you did anything wrong, I'm just interested in the specs on your engine and wondering about your pinging issue.

A few things I'd suggest:

1. The stock carb may be running the engine too lean which could be part of your pinging problem.

2. I don't know if you've kept the EGR system intact or disconnected it but there are a lot of vacuum routing issues associated with it and how it advances the timing as well as the EGR affecting the mixture. Disconnecting it will lead to the engine pinging more because of the carb calibration.

3. I would seriously look at having your distributor mechanical advance timing recurved to try to make it get the most power without pinging.

The bottom line with the 400 is that the stock heads have the open style comb. chamber and there just isn't any real effective way to get them to "quench" right.

I'm sorry Bill, Im just a bit touchy cause Im so scared I did something wrong and wasted all that money...it was lot to me and the little thing with the distributor gear has made be defensive I guess.

1) Yeah Im REALLY thinking hard about that Edlebrock intake and carb. I'm not short on power but high revs still seem hard to get and the CFM math does tend to make one wonder.

2) All the Emissions stuff is hooked back up and operating...They said they wanted it on for warranty purposes so Im a little stuck for now on mods too. But they did say the Edlebrock carb and intake was ok if I would let them install it.

3) Would I go to a specialty shop or is that pretty standard stuff? I don't think this machine shop is gonna know how to do that. They bore out a lot of motors but they dont really have an "Expert".

Now that spring is almost here I can spend some time playing with it...its been too #$^%^#$ cold and snowy till now.

Thanks for yakking with me and feel free to ask anything !! You guys helped me get this far...I trust your judgement .

I'd still check to make sure the EGR valve is functioning correctly. As far as tuning the distributor goes I think you'd want to find a dyno shop to do that. I wouldn't want a machine shop doing it.
