Has anyone had any experience with the TireTraker TPMS system? There are dozens on the market and I'm looking for a reliable system. This one is attractive because the main unit can be dropped in the center console until I need it.
Then there is another from Truck System Technologies which is fully featured as well. Only problem with this I see is the semi-permanent display. I don't want stuff cluttering up the truck for everyday driving.
I had the TST system. It was nice once it was set up. Temp and pressure. Head unit is relatively small. However, the sending units were large, and they didnt tell you you had to have metal valve stems. They have since come out with a smaller and/or lighter sending unit they say can go on rubber valve stems, but I still dont like that weight on the valve stem. Seems like asking for a problem. I was thinking of getting the tire-rack system that puts the sending units inside the rim.
I have the TST. Never had metal valve stems on the truck and had no problem. Before I changed the wheels/tires on the trailer I had rubber valve stems and had no problems.
Metal valve stems are a recommendation and not required.
I bought the valve stems figuring on changing them out when it was convenient.
When not in use the TST monitor sits in the console. In use I used Velcro to hold it in place. It has rechargeable batteries which hold a charge quite long.
I have a post here somewhere with a video showing my TST alerting me to w pressure loss.
I would not bother with the spares, extra $100 for the 2 sensors. I just check mine occasionally.
I guess they all work about the same???
With mine I check the pressure from the front seat before traveling for the day. Very simple to quickly scroll the various wheels and check pressure.
Check out the Hawkshead. They have replaceable batteries in the sensors. Most other when the battery is dead, you have to replace the sensor about 35-50 bucks. Here is a link. TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM
TST has two versions available. The original has 5 year batteries. The newer version has batteries that need to be replaced about every year or 2.
I questioned the vendor "what am I supposed to do in 5 years?" The reply was something like "this will be old technology by then and most likely a vastly improved system will be out". I tended to agree, we'll see.
Thanks porthole. I saw that a few days ago and the air compressor install looks great as well. Of topic, but does the compressor run much? Does it make much noise inside the cab?
The compressor was used only for the bags (no air horn) so it only ran when adjusting the bags. It would also occasionally run for "adjustments".
It was obvious when it ran but you get used to it.
I preferred it to being under the truck especially living near the beach.
