Another or a new alternator?
Another or a new alternator?
Hey guys, wondering if I should (or could even) add a second alternator in place of the smog cleaner (Cali truck) or if I should just get a beefier replacement?
It's a 1965 F100 240 I6, by the way.
I'm gonna be putting a lot of electrical extras into the truck over the next year and don't think the original will perform well enough. What is the original rated at anyway? I know there's some that Cadillac uses that are 130A. Also, do you know if the original's voltage is internally regulated?
Here's some pic's of the original alternator and the smog cleaner (that's the thing on top with no "cover")

I had a 65 vw bug that I had to make smog compliant in the seventies. The vw didn't include a smog pump, but your's could have been added at a later date. My 65 F250 352 doesn't have a smog pump, and it's a ca. original. I believe that LMC and NPD carry higher amp alternators.
Our alternators are externally regulated. You will have a voltage regulator on the radiator support, probably driver's side for your six. Your alternator is either a 38 or 42(?) amp unit. They weren't big back then. My 65 has the 38 amp unit as original rebuilt. The problem I see with units, such as a 130 amp, is can the trucks existing 45 year old wiring handle that kind of power.
