i just bought a f350 surplus military truck from the indians and trying to identify. vin # is f35jr290310. is the # system the same as the other f series of this era, in other words is this a 1962? also is it worth getting a title for it or should i part it out? i have read a lot of the threads where it seems there are a lot of problems updating these things, i.e. power brakes and steering? any comments? also it has 513 gears and duals, will the rear axle out of my 66 with the dana 60 410 locker fit underneath it? 513 vis a little low in my book.
It all depends on you. It's your ride, your priorities, and your interests. To be sure, making the truck into a year 200x clone would entail lots of problems (amazing how many problems go away when there's tons of work in resolving them, though, so nothing you've listed hasn't already been successfully done). If that's what you want the thing to be, then you may as well consider parting it out or selling it now. If you want something that captures the essence of automotive feel from the '60's, well that's what you've got. No offense intended at all, but I gather that you're looking for the former. They are geared numerically high. I've got 4:56's in my f250 and I'll probably leave 'em as is for the reasons that I've already mentioned.
To be sure, the choices are not easy ones to make. There's always conflict between the "stock" and "mod" approaches. Good luck in whatever you decide.
If you are in farm country, look for older mid sized farm trucks, resting in the back forty on some farm. Often they employ 'auxillery' transmisions, 'brownie boxs', maybe you can score an old age-appropriate 'over and under' gearbox to get overdrive with full load capabilities. If you part it, I might want the front axle, depending on width, spring perch position, drop, and king pin/spindle design.
I'm here in Arkansas & the F-350's of the 1961-1966 year model are very hard to come by. If you are considering parting out the truck, and if it has two good front fenders, I would be very interested in buying them from you. I have a 1965 F-350 with a 3-yard dump bed. I use it as needed. It has 68k original miles, and it has all 6 original split rims. To answer your question, the F-350, 250, & 100 all share the same grilles. A 1963 pickup and a 1963 F-350 will share the same grille. The F-350 and the F-100 4x4 will share similar characteristics. The battery will be under the passenger's side floor board, the front fenders will not have the lower lip, the inner wheel wells have more clearance. That is one reason why the battery is under the passenger's side floor board. Also, it's hard to steal a battery when your truck is locked
