Hey guys, still trying to figure out my problem. 02 F250. Burned up fuse panel. Been tracing wires for 2 days. Pulled out tail and backup harness yesterday. When the bulb sockets are in the harness I have continuity between backup black/pink and taillight brown. With sockets out no continuity. I don't think this should happen. Anybody had this problem? Any suggestions? The bulb sockets are clean. Thanks, Steve
Dave, Thanks for your reply. I cannot find a melted wire anywhere on the socket harness. That's what is so strange about it. when the sockets are unplugged from the harness there is no continuity from one wire to the other. When the backup and tail sockets are in either end of the harness the brown and black/pink have continuity between the two. When I plug the rear harness in the truck those two wires read all the way to where the fuse panel melted. I got all the wires loose from the melted plug at the fuse panel and out of 7 wires those are the only 2 that show continuity. Will these new harnesses read back through the other wire from the ground side? I didn't think they should. Thanks again, Steve
If the tranny is not in reverse(switch closed) and the headlight switch is not on(switch closed), they should not read together. They will both read to ground if you have the bulbs installed.
Thanks Dave, That's what I thought. That's what is so crazy, bulbs or sockets out they don't read together. Bulbs and sockets in they do. Makes no sense. Ohm'd sockets and bulbs and they read right. Got me scrarching my head. Got to find the problem before I put a new fuse box in my truck. Any suggestions? Thanks, Steve
Just make sure the taillight fuse and the reverse light fuse are not oversized in the fuse box. They should protect the wiring.
Your trailer plug is factory correct? It should be fed separately from the truck's lights. If the trailer wiring is fed from the truck rear lighting, it's not original, which is ok, but would be a good place to check for problems.
Thanks Dave, Trailer harness is factory unit. I pulled it off truck and ohm'd all the wires. No problems. I think the fuse is what started my problem 25 instead of 20. It completely melted the plug in the back of my fuse panel. I have all the wires seperated now. Got to get another box and that plug. No other damage that I can find in the box. Still can't figure out why the two wires show continuity when the taillight sockets are in the harness. Can these sockets short internally? The tail and backup wires do not show continuity when the sockets are out of the harness. I have a Helms wiring manual coming for the wiring on my truck. Hope it tells me something. You have been very helpful. Maybe we can figure this thing out. Steve
