i have a 89 7.3 IDI, its making a very loud diesel screaming noise when im not under load but just cruising, the only time its ever done it before is when its really cold and then it stops after about a minute when it warms up, but now its doing it constantly going down the highway when it does it its burning a lot richer with a lot more black smoke. i have a pyro and its showing its running pretty normal. Does any one have any ideas?
Sounds like the water pump bearing might be seizing to me except that when that goes you usually get some smoke from the seized pulley rubbing on the belt. That usually stops you pretty quick if you want to save your belt! Your temp gauge would start going up anyway as no coolant is being pumped. Not saying that's what it is. It may be something as simple as a belt needing tensioned or changed.
sorry for the confusion, if you know what a power stroke sounds like it sounds louder and more "diesely" then a IDI, my IDI sounds like a stroker only a lot louder obviously not normal for my IDI, it is defiantly over fueling because im geting a lot more black smoke then normal and my fule milage went to crap.
how many miles are on this ip?
did you check to see if the cold advance solenoid is turning off? i didn't know they failed in the ON position, but i suppose.....why couldn't they.-dunno.
"excessive rattle" would have likely been a better description than "screaming".
ahhh.
there's more to the story.
what is the whole story on this engine?
did you replace the ip(s) yourself? how did you go about it?
where are you buying them?

I think it must be possible to fail "On", mine never drops below +/- 900 RPM
as far as how i put it in i got a detailed set of instruction's from Dave off of this forum, and i talked to a couple of diesel shops, i didn't pull the timing gears i just undid the 3 bolts on the front and slid the old pump out and slid the new one in lined up with a dowel the rest is pretty straight forward.
