i have a 90 f150 4x4 with the 300 i6 and a 5 speed. a couple days ago my truck started sputtering really bad i got under it to check my fuel lines and found i might have a slight kink in my line and a hole in the vacuum line got that one replaced and still does it. dont have a check engine light on or nutting like that. anyone got any ideas?
I would get a fuel pressure gauge and see what pressure readins you have at the fuel rail. It may be the kink in the line or a fuel pump going out. Let us know what you find out.
Also, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Any sort of tune-up done? Just asking these ?'s for a general idea of vehicle health.
changed fuel filter this past summer and did a tune up cap button plugs and wires bout the same time. what kind of gauge do i use? and where would i hook it to on the fuel rail? i have never done that before. what kind of pressure should i be seeing at the rail if its working properly?
The gauge is strictly a Fuel Pressure Gauge. Can be had for around $25 to $50, depending on the brand and/or parts house. May even be able to rent it.
There is a Shrader valve on the back of the engine bay on the fuel rail. You connect the gauge directly to this with the supplied adapter. Pressure reading for the 4.9L should be in the 40-60 PSI range.
I will have to look at my haynes manual for pump pressure for the following scenarios:
Key on > Fuel pump jumper for constant run
Key Off > How much fuel pressure it holds and if the pump isn't holding pressure
If you love your Ford or have another vehicle that could benefit from a Fuel Pressure Gauge tester, I would opt to buy one and keep it for later use as it can really be handy.
would it be beneficial for me to keep the pressure guage on it all the time? and thanks for the replies its been helpful. aint had time to check any of it yet as i have been workin 7 days a week
