Transmission question.

Hey guys, I have a question about some transmissions.

My truck is a 1987 F250 XLT Lariat, supercab 4wd 6.9L diesel and a C6 transmission.

So lately I've had some drive shaft issues, and the transmission ended up getting run a few miles low on fluid twice. Of course knowing Fords auto transmission record, I knew it was coming. Today, 4 days after I got it fixed the tranny went out.

So my question to you guys, is there an overdrive transmission that is the same length as my C6 and will bolt up to the diesel?

Also, anything else I would need to swap if I did this transmission swap?

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is no other bolt in replacement for your C6. You only option is another C6 or find all the pieces to install an E4OD transmission. The latter is 100% fully electronic controlled so you will need the electrical parts as well. Even then, the E4OD is longer than the C6.

You might consider a ZF 5-speed manual swap.

Thanks sir. How hard do you think it would be to swap in the Zf?

You can always rebuilt the C6, should only cost around ~400-700$ max!

To swap in a ZF5 you'll have to get a clutch/brake pedal assembly from any 1980-1991 Ford F-series. You can't use one out of a 92+ truck, they have different pedal assemblys.

Clutch master, fire-wall re-enforcement kit, and cut a hole in your floor hump.

NOTE:

Since your truck is a 4x4, you can only use a 4x4 transmission, a 2wd tranny will not fit. You'll have to find a transmission out of another 4x4 diesel truck. Gas transmission will not fit either, bellhousing bolt patern is different.

Right, I am familiar with manual transmission components, but was not familiar with Ford bellhousing bolt patterns or pedal assemblies, so very good information thanks.

If nothing else I will rebuild the C6 myself, but an overdrive would sure be nice as I do a lot of highway driving in this truck.

How much longer is the E4OD? And is the tail bolt pattern/tail shaft the same? Will a transmission from a 7.3 truck work? What all needs to be changed over to use the electronic transmission?

I know it's a lot of questions, but I do appreciate the information.

I wonder if an AOD would take the torque?

You can always get your self an OD unit like a Gear Vendors.

I don't know much about the E4OD's but I do know they are very big and heavy transmissions.

Any diesel transmission from 1983-1997 will bolt right up. The best E4OD's are the later ones on the 7.3 PowerStrokes.

If you go E4OD, you'll need a computer for it. And I hear there well over 500$.... and you'll need an aftermarket one.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the E4OD, if you do alot of highway driving, I'd go for the 5 speed standard swap, it's a darn good tranny, plus has OD and no electronics.

And the swap can be done in a weekend.

Any price estimate on the ZF swap? Would be buying used parts of course.

Depends where/who you get it from, and how bad he wants to get rid of it.

I've seen some go for 800$ complete with a running diesel engine, and i've seen some go for over 1000$ transmission alone.

The other parts needed for the swap i'm not really sure about prices.

Mmk so.

Pedal assembly
Clutch
Flywheel
Transmission
Clutch cable (?)
Firewall reinforcement kit
Shifter

Am I missing anything?

Is the ZF the same length? If not, what all needs to be moved? Is the bolt pattern on the tail the same?

The clutchs are hydraulic on these.

Other than that, you got it.

You will need a 4x4 ZF or one out of a F450 with the parking brake on the transmission. Reason for this is the 2wd ZF's have a tailshaft, 4x4's and F450 don't have that tailshaft. Not sure about length compared to the C6. Not sure but you might need the crossmember for the ZF. You'll most likelly need to shorten or lengthen your driveshaft.

If you have a 4x4 then your transfer case will bolt to the ZF if it comes from a 4x4 also.

What about the shifter? Currently there is a transfer case shifter there.
