We sold our 98 GMC K2500 Suburban and recently puchased a 2002 Excursion with the tow package. We have a 5300 travel trailer (2 axle). We had the Tekonsha Voyager brake control module and were very happy with it. The Excursion came with a small 6 lead wiring harness with 5 wires for attaching to a third-party brake controller. I don't know where this harness plugs in. I've read through several articles on your board (as well as the owners manual..useless) and cannot find the male connector for this harness. I pulled the fuse panel cover under the steering wheel, but could not see it. I'm assuming the 7 conducter module is prewired for the brake controller since the rig came with the modular wiring harness.
There is a grey plug behind the little cubby by your right knee.
Take off the panel below the steering column and look to the right toward the radio. There is a dash brace between the steering column and the radio. You will see the plug in the opening of the dash brace.
If you do not have the factory harness that came with your X (mating plug on one end, bare wires on the other), you can buy one at Ford. Tekonsha sells one too. The factory plug is pre-wired for brakes.
After reading further, we upgraded the brake controller to the Prodigy ($125) and purchased a pre-wired harness ($29) that matches the modular connectors on the X and the Prodigy. Worked like a charm and I concur with everything I've read...the Prodigy is much better than the Voyager! I think the whole install took about 15 minutes. We just stayedin town for our first trip since I haven't pulled anything with the X yet and purchased a new controller. I'd hate to break down outside San Bernardino and not be able to stop or climb. The X handled the trailer effortlessly, at least compared the Suburban we sold. I like the voltage display on the brake controller showing the signal variance transmitted to the trailer brakes.
