Timing light picking up #2 plug wire?

Timing light picking up #2 plug wire?

This makes no sense...I have an '85 F150 with the 300. When I go to time it, I'll hook up the light to #1 and see no mark on the pully. Just for the heck of it I switched it to #2 and the mark shows up. I have the truck timed like this and it runs fine. I even hooked up my vac gauge and it's at the highest vacuum. I had the same truck, but an '84 a couple of years ago that was the same way. Any info on this? Am I going crazy?

This happens on mine too ('82). I am not sure, but I think there are timing marks in two places on the timing gear cover, one on the driver side and one on the passenger side. I use the timing marks on the passenger side and I connect the timing light to cylinder 2. The marks on the driver side are just too hard to see on my truck, so I have never been able to use them.

So, I don't think you are going nuts (unless we BOTH are....)

I would put the engine #1 piston at TDC on compression stroke, and see where the mark on the v.dampener is in relation to the timing index. If it is way off, then I would guess that your v.dampener has slipped on its rubber mount.

Or you're both whacko!

Seeing where the mark is when # 1's at TDC was my next step. Just went through this on my $500 beater Taurus. The balancer slipped. Chased my tail for a bit on that one.

I would also suggest using one of the old type t.lights where you insert the spring between the plug and the light. That would give you a better reading.
