my truck was making the same noise but on the pass. side. turned out i had over torqued the locking nuts when i did the manual hub conversion. i torqued the nut to 50 ft pounds to seat the wheel bearing, then forgot to back of it before installing the rest of the hub. i new the bearing was still good, so i just backed off on the locking nut a little and bingo noise was gone. something to check out.
Here is a common problem that a lot of people don't realize. First off, did you have a garage do the swap or did you do it your self? Some people think that it is necessary to grease the hub before installation. BIIIIIG no no. That can actually cause severe damage to the hub. It causes the locking mechanism in the hub to slip which, in turn, strips the gears on the lock. This could be your problem. I would pull the hubs and check them thoroughly for any kind of wear. They aren't incredibly expensive. If you find anything that seems out of place buy a new pair and install. Otherwise, you may have bigger issues here. You only hear it on the drivers side? do you get the noise with the hubs locked both when 4wd is engaged and not engaged? Could be an issue in the xfer case. But I would first hold the hubs accountable.
And yes, You definitely should look at the wheel bearings. If the hub is too tight it can cause some really horrible problems down the road!!! Good thought!
Nothing was changed, I assumed it an axle joint or something but the Ford mechanics said there is nothing wrong. The noise is only with the hubs locked in during cold weather. Unlock hubs no noise, warm weather with hubs locked in, no noise. I don't think it's very serious, more annoying than anything.
