Drain Water Separator???

Drain Water Separator???

Ok I am sorry I know this have been covered extensively but I still have a few questions. I got the warning light the other day. This is the first F250 I have had so I tried to drain it and nothing came out. I took it in and got the oil changed, oil filters and fuel filters. Then the light came on again I tried to drain again and then it started just dripping. I don't know how long to let it drip so I left it for about 20 seconds, it never got to a steady stream. The light came back on. Should I let it drain until I see a steady stream? Is there anyway that I should clean this?

It is 09 6.4 with 45k miles on it.

Where you on a incline? Also take gas cap off might relieve pressure

I may have been on a slight incline. I will try it with the fuel cap off. Should I let it drain til it is a constant flow and not dripping?

When I do mine its a flow for about 20~30 second. Then drips...make sure you get a empty bottle to check for water...if no water then change sensor

How hard is it to change the sensor? Is it right by the drain? At work so I will look at it later?

By the way, thanks for the help; it is very much appreciated.

Very easy buy the part from ford I think its 35 bucks and comes with directions. Make sure you key cycle after drain.

Do you mean drain, turn the key to on then sit for about 10 seconds and then start?

Sorry...after you get done with everything...before you fire it up cycle it about 5 times its all in the directions though

If it does not clear up then I would be taking that lower filter off. Shine a light in there and have a look. It might also need to be cleaned out.

Check out this article about Fuel Coagulation and cleaning that fuel/water separator.

I agree, remember gas in fuel bowls in carbs in our younger years!!

I drained it last night for about 7-8 seconds. At first it had a steady stream (about 1 second) and then it started dripping. It was still dripping when I closed the valve. Should I let it go until it completely stops? I removed the fuel cap and that seemed to help a little bit. Should I try to cycle the key while it is draining as well. I have seen some people say that it takes 10-20 seconds and some say all night. I ended up with about a quarter size amount of water in the sample I got. I know I may need to clean the inside of this module. How hard is this to do? Can I just take the cover off and clean it while it is still on the truck? What is the best thing to clean it with? Should I have a new gasket ready in case there is something wrong with the old one? I know I may need to replace the sensor as well but that looks like a straightforward job. Thanks for all the help guys.

You might want to go ahead and drain again, if it is still just a dribble then Id take it off and clean it.

Attached is the culprit for you to look at.

At the above link they show the cover of it off.


So just remove those bolts and clean it out. I'd wipe as much as possible then maybe a light spraying with some carb cleaner...very little.

Put back to gether, fill up and drain it again to make sure all is clean.
