Well my brother just bought a 98 explorer sport a few weeks ago. He has been driving it quit a bit and now says that the overdrive light is blinking he says it goes off for awhile and then start back up. WHat could be the problem? It has 186k on it and is an auto. Also worse case what does a used tranny cost?
Gonna have to have some codes pulled to give you a better idea of what it is. Something that old, AutoZone can pull codes out of for you no problem, just don't let them sell you anything.
Correct, pulling anything more than powertrain codes generally requires a professional grade scan tool, although there are ABS scan tools now entering the consumer market.
To get an idea why the OD light is flashing he's probably going to need to find a person or shop with a professional scan tool. If he doesn't have a friend with one that will do it for a beer, then it might be in his best interest to find a reputable transmission shop in his area to read the code.
Seems odd. the transmission is PART of the powertrain. A 98 doesn't have a seperate TCM, and fault codes would be stored in the PCM. I guess their scan tools are probably not the highest quality anyway, and the operators are probably worse.
