Diesel Additives
Diesel Additives
cford716 posted a thread about cetane/anti-gel additives.. Since some of us - ok - some of you, are in a colder climate, this might be of interest.
This from the MC-Diesel 6.7 hand out:
Characteristics that are essential to diesel fuel;
Cetane Rating and Lubricity:
NOTE: The temperature at which fuel begins to burn is referred to as the ignition point. Diesel fuel, which has a low ignition point, is said to have good ignition quality.
CETANE RATING:
* A measure of the ignition quality of a diesel fuel.
* The higher the cetane number of a diesel fuel, the shorter the lag time from when the fuel first enters the combustion chamber until it ignites.
* A high quality diesel fuel, with a high cetane rating, will ignite the moment it enters the combustion chamber.
* Engine performance will suffer if there is delay in ignition of the fuel.
* To check the cetane rating, a Rotunda Cetane Tester (078-0012-1) and conversion chart is needed. (I bounced this off my 9X multiplication tables, but it didn't help)
LUBRICITY:
* Lubricity refers to the capability of the fuel to reduce friction.
* High lubricity is important for diesel fuels because of the tight tolerances in the injectors and injection system.
* If a fuel with low lubricity is used, more friction and wear may occur between moving parts within the injection system.
* Low sulfur fuel - removing sulfur also removes wax and lubricity.
NOTE: An injector lubricity additive is required for new injector break-in period.
* Cetane promotes auto-ignition. (That's a good thing)
* High cetane rating helps ensure complete burning of the fuel and reduces carbon and sludge build-up.
