What basic elements are required for a diesel engine to start?
1) Air (Management)
2) Heat
3) Fuel
We're gonna skip air management. (Since my book does.)
HEAT
* The Glow Plug Control Module, or GPCM, is located under the passenger side battery box.
* The GPCM is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and through dedicated circuits.
* The GPCM also controls the Reductant (DEF) heating element.
(Betcha didn't know that!)
And:
"Contrary to popular belief, the glow plugs do not heat the air in the combustion chamber; instead, they provide an ignition point to light the fuel when it is sprayed into the chamber."
Some of the features of the ceramic glow plugs that are used on the 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel are:
*End of compression temperatures is high enough to auto-ignite the fuel.
*The ceramic glow is closer to the rim of the piston than the injector.
*This causes the heat from the glow plug to contact the rim zone of the fuel spray.
