I hope this question can qualify on this forum. i have a sand rail i am painting. i have it all sand blasted and plan to prime/paint tomorow. i am getting the middle grade quality primer form the auto parts store. question is how long do i have to wait before painting? any other advise for me?
well went a different route than orginal. i am just using spray paint cans for everything. Even though the frame was blasted first, i have a good coat of rustoleum rust tough primer on it now. going to give it a light sand with some 800 grit to get a smooth finish. my question now is the paint. Do you think i have to stick with rustoleum brand or should i be able to use anything. reason is coloring i have found so far. my favorite option is some Duplicolor Engine Enamel. Can i use this? is there a different between regular paint and enamel? will it adhere to the primer well? or do i need to use regular paint? can i use any brand of paint?
Ahhh!. A fellow sand-rail owner. U have to keep in mind what u are using this car for. It'll probably get sand blasted every time u use it. I would use a good tough industrial paint that won't chip easily. Rust is the no.1 enemy for any race-type vehicle. Any unused holes drilled in the frame should be plugged. I wouldn't use engine enamel. If your weary about using a different paint, try a test piece of metal with your primer and a can of paint to see what happens.
I used two different types of Rustoleum once to paint the window frame on our CJ-5 and learned my lesson. The first was on there for a couple weeks but I wanted a shinier finish so I sanded it and sprayed an emanel on top of it and it didn't take long for the whole thing to start bubbling. After it dried, it was a nightmare to sand back to a something that was smooth enough to re-spray with the original paint.
