air intakes ?

What is everybody doing for an air intake on a 96 F 250 5.8 ?
Those air tubes and box look really restricted.
K&n makes the open air ,but I don't want my air element hanging off the front of the motor exposed.
Pro's - Cons ?
Thanks
Jim

On a stock truck the factory intake works just fine. Many here have swapped out the 5.0/5.8L intake tube for the 4.9/7.5L tube. The latter pulls in air from behind the grille instead of between the hood and radiator support on the 5.0/5.8L equipped trucks. Use a good quality paper filter element.

I will second what he just said. I swapped the 5.0/5.8 tube for the 4.9/7.5 tube. I would not fool with the hot air intake junk or oiled filters for that matter. The stock intake setup flows enough air for the 460 so I don't see how it can be restricting the small blocks.

I put a K&N stock style filter on my daily driver (4cyl SUV). The only thing I can say is that it did make a difference. My SUV used to down shift every time it hit a small hit and a little head wind. After swaping to the K&N it cut about 1/2 of the down shifting from the tranny out. I'm sure it's the difference of about 1-2hp but whatever... it helped... K&N's are 1,000,000mile filters but you do have to clean and oil them every once and a while. Other than that I would go with the 4.9 or 7.5 intake tube that takes cool air from in front of the radiator (cool air becomes warm inside intake or "expands" to make a "denser" charge = a few more HP). I have not put a K&N on my truck yet so can't sware what it would or would not do for the truck... another selling point was the fact that paper filters for my 4 cyl are $23!!!!!!!!!! the K&N was $58 with the cleaning kit and i don't EVER have to repace it again... you do the math...

I have the K&N drop in filter on my stock 5.0 intake system. The K&N drop in should be standard for anyone in my mind. I noticed the other day that the tube from the filter box to the top of the radiator is gone, so I am sucking all underhood hot air. Rather than fix it I am going with an aftermarket intake. The main thing that you want to look for in an intake is the box that goes around the filter. This metal box is usually designed to suck in cold air from fender opening, headlights, etc while also not allowing the intake to take in air or moisture from under the hood. I am not sure about the power increase, but I have had success with intake upgrades on previous vehicles.

I don't like oiled cotton filters because they do not filter as well. This is a debate no one will win though. Just run whatever you prefer.

Very true. You can buy any intake and replace the filter with what you prefer.

I don't think the filtration quality is as good... however, I run a Wix oil filter to take the extra fine particulate out... I'd probably go back to paper media if I had more surface area on the filter... IE Typhoon K&N style. At least then you could still draw a larger volume of air even if you had a more restrictive filter on.

I understand the box forward changes, but what about those 2 twisted throttle body hoses to the air box? Thats where the restiction would be coming from. They are almost flat where passing over the radiator hose. Even a round smooth bore tubing has to be better.

No they don't filter as well, you are right there, but thats why they flow better..

BUT, here is an option to get some more filteration out of them. K&N RX-4730DK - K&N DryCharger Air Filter Wraps - Overview - SummitRacing.com
I use one on mt K&N and it also helps keep water out/off.

I'd just rather have a good paper filter and lose the 1 or 2 horsepower and know I'm not getting dirt in the engine. Like I said though, get whatever you want.

This is why I went to a clamp on style K&N. The curve on the lid wasn't letting the filter do its job, and dirt was getting in the air intake. Its something to look at on a older rig.

When I got my truck, it had a cheap, pos air intake on it with two conical filters. I bought a new airbox and replaced all the stock components. The snorkel was still in place so I was able to reuse that part. I see your dilemma though.

I'd get a intake tube from an I6 and get a non-oiled synthetic filter such as a AFE Pro-Dry.
