I have 59 F250 and am curious what is the difference between the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton? To my knowledge it is just the axle and is an 8 lug. For when the restoration starts is there really going to be much difference with anything other than that?
Paul
As far as the body I don't think there is any differences except for badging. The basic frame should be the same and I think the front axle is the same. I'm not sure about the spindles, the brakes may be larger and as you aleady know the rear axle is a heavier full foating type. Spings will obviously be different.
Jollygreen, welcome to FTE.As a fellow 59' F250 owner,I can say that the only differences I found are these:
1. Heavier duty springs
2.Different rear end.F250 has Dana 60 vs Ford 9" for the F100
3. Different wheel patterns.
4. Different optional wheels/tires.
Other members may know of additional differences. The F100/250 use the same front spindles.Spring widths are the same. You can use ones for the lighter duty F100's, dimensionally, but will loose your 3/4 ton rating. The original owner had optional 19.5" ties/wheels.Tall,skinny,expensive,and difficult to find.In addition, without the cab-over camper for which he bought them, they were real squirrelly going down the road,so I ditched them.
Most parts, you'll have no problem finding replacements, i.e mechanicals. If it's to remain an essentially stock restoration, start searching Ebay,as some electrical parts/switches and other parts are not reproduced.NumberDummy helped me locate an NOS set of rear springs,2 out of only 5 left in the U.S..I'd assume the other three are still sitting on their dealership shelves. No front ones remain. If you have any questions, fire away.Post your location in your profile so fellow members that are close can perhaps help out,and post some photos when you have time.Steve.
Yah the only problem I have right now is with the rear axle. My fronts spring were just rebuild by the last owner and the backs look good as well. Which dis spite the dropping temps it was 20 out last week and I got out to rip out the rear axle.. However the shop manual really didn't say much about the leaf spring so after getting everything else out the leaf spring are all that holds it in. I do have some pics in a gallery of the truck. I do kind of want to replace the flat bed back to a real bed though.
Hey Jollygreen_giant welcome to FTE! What part of North Dakota you from? My wife was born in Moorehead Minnesota and her Grandfather lived in Whapaton (sp?) ND. I had the pleasure of going up that way once. I think it was 60 degrees here when we left and about 10 degrees when we got up there with a heck of a wind blowing. Her grandfather use to call us and let us know it was minus so and so with a 30 mile an hour wind! This old southern boy wants NO part of that again!
I am in Grand Forks, ND which is an about 2 hour N of Whapaton, and yes it does get cold and sure does blow. It make it difficult to go work on the Truck which has to sit out side since it is to wide for the old garage...
Jollygreen, there is one thing I forgot to mention. If the truck was originally equipped with optional larger factory wheels/tires,and depending on how large, the fenders would be from the F350 since they can accommodate the increase in size. That is the case with mine.
