burning smell
I put dpf on and have driven around 800 miles all freeway. When I get out of the truck its smells really hot and looks real hot. Does the dpf have this profound effect I can't remember what it was like before I removed the dpf.

Exactly! My guess is you have the latest programming that does not show the "cleaning exhaust filter" message till it is completed.
If it is smelly and lots of heat expansion crackling then it was still in progress when you stopped.
It will be ok, just drive the truck.
