I was leaving school today and while I was waiting in the parking lot, I looked out in the road and a nice lady I knew was coming to get her child, when some girl in a little geo pulls out and runs her clean off the road. Made me mad. So then I'm waiting again, and there's a plastic avalanche waiting to the right of me. She starts backing up and almost hits me, but she sees me and stops, and I move up towards the road making a gradual left turn, and she comes around to the right of me (off the pavement) and cuts in front of me, where the bend in the traffic is. Then she takes off at the highway right in front of oncoming traffic. So on top of being mad at the first thing, now I'm seeing red at that blue avalanche. If I ever see that truck near mine again, I'm gonna have some words with the driver. Seeing all this today makes me want to get a ranchhand frontend for my truck, so I won't be bothered if I get hit.
There was an interesting segment that relates to this subject on 60 Minutes last night. It dealt with the "psychology of the SUV". It was a little artsy fartsy for me, and you had to take it with a grain of salt, but I think the basic premise was good.
It demonstrated how the auto makers are appealing to the aggressive, intimidation factor that the SUV represents, especially in their marketing toward women. They had a couple interviews with people asking them why they bought SUV's. The majority said because it made them feel safe and that they "command the road", not because they needed the offroad capability or the cargo space.
I think you just saw the negative aspect of that mentality.
I have noticed the same thing, usually it the chebies though
At times on the interstate when traffic is heavy, I have had SUV's traveling in lane beside me will swerve towards me, hoping I'll hit the brakes so they can then cut in front of me. At first, it worked, but now that I have seen it quite a few times, I just figure that if they want to bounce their 6,000 pound vehicle off of my 12,000 pound steer axle, more power to them.
my old truck was lifted, with big tires, and a pushbar in the front, and LOUD exhuast.... people didnt mess with me much. when they did, i reacted, and it usually appeared to me as if they crapped their pants. forgive me, but my old truck was a 2000 dodge, im sure when i "reacted" they could see the Ram's nostrols on the hood from their rear view mirror. they usually drove pretty polite after that.
Honestly I don't see SUV's as a truck and my reason is this
Most people i see dirving SUV's are of course women and those things ain't as bad as the driver might think...I love my truck with all my heart and I would never ever ever drive a car or SUV and plus to be all good and honest I get better gas mileage than my friends who own SUV's..Plus most people drive their SUV's stock anyhow and alot of the SUV's ain't that much more higher off the ground then some cars..now i know alot of SUV's are higher up and all...but i just saying my 2 cents.....

I have to agree with you all on that. I highly dislike modern SUVs, but i technically drive one(Bronco 2). It has to be the new wave of soccer moms. first it was station wagons(the older bigger ones are pretty cool still) then minivans, now they are giving SUVs a bad name. Ive seen people roll these things becasue they treat it like a car. IMO i drive what i can fit in comfortably(im 6'3" 230lbs). but thats me
Tim
That's why I love my 81' I say come on you want to hit me go ahead. I may not have any fancy air bags or dent resistant doors, but my truck's real metal not plastic. He He
i saw the 60 minutes report, too. interesting. these people won't be thinking about how intimidating they are when they whack a minivan and kill the family inside.
i will admit, i do love the size of my truck. there aren't to many that mess with me and i definitely don't get pushed around by anyone.
it never fails, everytime i go driving (to run an errand or whatever) someone always does something illegal/stupid on the streets.

...Hmmm...My 79 f-250 oxidised paint, dents, dirt, loud muffler and my generally scruffy apperance tends to get a little more respect or at least wariness from other drivers as well...Hmm...I wonder why that be...
mmmmmm fresh air
glad everyone here can agree
some things can really go down after certain people start to use them and the public takes notice...thats the truth, thats not my opinion....
I gotta say, as far as modern vehicles go, pickups pretty much rule the road in the light vehicle class, regardless of make or model, I mean someone would have to be crazy to try pushin you around when your sitting in a vehicle thats weighs from 2 to 3-1/2 tons(or up to 5 tons loaded) and sits about 6 ft high.
But theres at least one car I'm personally aware of, that no pickup would wan't to tango with in it's wildest dreams, a 70's vintage Lincoln.
You know, the ones with the hoods that look 7 ft long, sits real low, enough room inside for 7 people, the body alone on this thing has to weigh 3000lbs ( this might be an exaggeration, but I doubt it), you hit the gas and soon your barrel-azzin' down the road at 90mph, and you feel like your driving some kind of land boat!...lol.
460 and all I think the one we had weighed something like 7000lbs empty. I think even my uncles F250 and my pop's C20 were scared of it...lol.
With it's thick beefy chromed out bumpers, glass head lights, and wicked lookin' V--v--V front end, it seemed to be screamin' "mess with me"...lol.

My 1995 Aerostar got broadsided by a 78 Lincoln driven by a 87 (!) year old guy. Aerostar was on the losing part of the exchange for sure. Guy had worn his seat belt he never would have gotten hurt, only thing wrong on his car was the bumper and hood. Lincoln $600 in used parts, Aerostar over $12000, ended up being close to $14000.
"I have never had an accident"
That you know of! How would you know, you didnt see the stop sign did you.
Glad you turned out to be ok, hope the ole' man was ok in the end also.
I really am glad that you turned out ok man, a 250/350 from today I'm sure would get the worst of it in a clash with one of those old big boats, and I'm sure the lincoln would be limpin' afterwards but the truck would be gettin' it's last rights.
An Aerostar is nothin' but a speed bump for that big ole' car, well....maybe a board fence....lol. I'd crap if I saw somethin' that big n' ugly about to broadside me
I like mine for many reasons, but my truck is nice because of the size (yes I do feel safer) the height (I can see over the other cars to see what the other idiots are doing) it's utility (when I do need it, it's there for me, and it can make me money not just suck it up ) and lastly it's coziness. Trucks (at least regular cabs) are trully one man machines, made for the gypsy/lone ranger type guy who loves to be alone (me) I guess I'm anti-clausterphobic then?
