I'm still troubleshooting a poor mileage problem. I've opened up the intake and exhaust pretty well but still am not doing so well econo wise. I think it's the fuel pump. Poor mileage, it falls on it's face from idle to any throttle, and there is a small amount diesel in the engine valley. And when I say small I mean just the crap in the valley is barely damp. It also read like 10 psi at the FPR at idle and with throttle. I need to be pretty positive due to funding. Sound like fuel pump to yall? If so what are some good brands to get? I found a Bosch with a lifetime warranty and some airtex units with 1 year warranties.
Could be the pump. I'd check the FPR before spending the $100 on a pump. Especially the screens - if they are clogged, you'll have all kinds of issues. Factory calls for 40 psi min and you've had to have seen the 'shim posts' where some get up to 70 psi.
The pump itself is made by carter. The OEM pumps are Carter and Airtex gets them from Carter.
I don't know other than clogs what all goes wrong with the FPR but it has been recently dismantled, cleaned well, and re-oringed still yielding me 10-12 psi.
The pump is a two-stage type. The first part draws the fuel from the tank(s) and delivers it to the filter. After filtering, fuel goes to the piston stage. It should come out with at least 40 PSI to go to the heads, then the injectors. The FPR control the pressure via the relief valve.
If you are only seeing 12 psi and the regulator is ok, some possible items are the pump is worn out, the filter is clogged, or the first stage inlet is restricted/obstructed.
Cool. Well ill check the inlets. The screen gets cleaned regularly and the filter changed often. I did shim it when I initially checked the pressure but it didn't change the pressure. If blowing out the inlets doesn't change anything then I guess ill probably pickup that bosch pump. Thanks gents
