My 87-f150 rides fine, but for some reason it will stall without warning. It acts as if it is not getting spark or fuel. Had both checked out... they check out fine. Changed the module. Same thing happened, drive for a while and it stalls.
Took it to 2 shops...they could not find the problem. After it stalls, if I let is sit for 2-3 minutes usually it will start. But that's no consolation, I can be riding 65 MPH on the highway and it will stall.
Any ideas will be helpful.
As an aside, sometimes the radio will short and the rear lights will short...could that be related to the stall problem?
It sounds like it could be the TFI (ignition module). It is mounted on your distributer. It is a poor design and ford has actaully been sued over it. The ignition module is too close to the heat generated by the exhaust. I changed mine out. It is simple, don't pull the ditributer out (like they tell you to do), just losen the bolt like you are setting the time and move the distributer to take the two bolts out of the TFI. speaking from experience on the 89 f-150 that i used to own, and after putting 2 thousand dollars into it. there is a fusable like that is off of the soolenoid that goes to the computer. CHECK IT. there are also several other fusable links to check that are all near the battery and solenoid i cant remember how many but check them all. my truck did the same thing so i started replacing stuff (big mistake). with my experience start with the easy stuff and 90% of the time thats what is wrong.
Grab both ends and pull gently but firmly. If they stretch AT ALL, they're burnt inside the insulation. Get replacement fusible link wire from a parts store, and make sure it's rated for the same current. You can find out what OE was in a Haynes wiring diagram.
