Hi all. I am new here so bear with me. I have kinda odd ball 1983 4x4 manual overdrive transmission. The tag reads "New Process Gear", model #
2 8F4. It is out of an '83 F150 4x4 with a 351C. I could really use some info on this 'cause I lost 2nd and 4th.
the syncro's won't make it loose gears , the syncro's make it hard to shift & grind into gear, I think you have bigger problems. Go ahead & pull it out & take it appart the problems will be obvious
its out, then on a clean bench take it appart & lay it all out & keep track of it, I think you will find the parts are more expensive than a used unit. Get a shop manual (book)
I took the pan off and all the gears seem good. I see no metal chips inside it. I have a guy who will rebuild it for $900. I bought this from a friend after all this happened. So I can't for sure describe what it was doing. He said 4th was going or gone and 2nd was on it's way. Which made me think synchronizers. Thanks.
in the first post you said "manual overdrive" so I thought it was a standard. If it has a pan then its probably an automatic, so what model of tranny is it?
351c? Not a stock motor for your truck as they were never installed in trucks other than the Ranchero. They are usually built for power at higher revs.
BTW. My trans is not in that info you gave. Before my friend sold it to me, he took it to a reputable trans shop and the guy said he had only seen 1 of them in the 25 years he's been doing it. That is why it is so important to find out what this is. My truck is the one rated just below the F250. So I wouldn't think it would be that "light duty".
Looks like 6, sorry, outside getting dark (on the valve covers). Does have the sticker on the passenger side that says W1.......maybe 351W? It also states under the hood that it is a 5.8 liter.
6 bolt valve covers points to 351W. Do the covers have slanted ends, making a trapazoid? Like so: /===\ ??
As for the trans, if it is an OD, it is geared like a 3 speed in 1-2-3, with 4th OD.
But those are not New Process transmissions. That would be the NP435, a granny first, non-OD, iron case, aluminum top trans as pictured on that previous link and here also:
My buddy that sold it to me came by last night. He said 4th gear/ OD never went out it just hummed slightly and had a slight vibration, but didn't effect the performance. He drove it like that for 3 years when it started to get hard to put into 2nd. If that bit helps anyone with ideas. Also, this is NOT a granny low. Otherwise I wouldn't have been interested. I took pics of the trans last night and will hopefully figure out how to post them later. The transmission ID tag says New Process Gear right on it. So, I don't know<<<<<<<<<throws hands in air.
if it's hard to put into 2nd you might be right= syncronizer ring or put it in & try it in your truck.....is it one of those tranny's that you can start out in second if you want?
