Well I was going to do some running around today in my Sixty Six Ferd ( ) and I saw a nice puddle under my truck on the drivers side. So I get under it and look whats going on. (brake fluid coming out of the drivers side front drum)...So only one thing that could be (broken wheel cly. ) So I pull it into my shop and take off the wheel and take off the center cap, take off the wheel nut w/bearing and go to pull the drum off and she wont come off!!! WTF? So after an hour of trying to pull it off and trying to loosen up my brakes that wont loosen.... I get the trusty screw drivers and pry the drum off! ugh So I get the drum off and found a total mess!..... Not only have my brakes been dragging they were put on backwards (front on the backside and the back on the front side) and the retainer and spring on the front side was BROKEN!!! So now I have it all tore down and waiting for new wheel cly to come in tomorrow. So while Im waiting for my parts I am going to pull off all my wheels/drums to check all the other brakes and make sure they are ok.
Found a spring and retainer in a box of extra parts I have laying around! So I cleaned up all my brake hardware.
Exactly why I haven't pulled my front driver side off yet....
wanna come over and help me bleed all 4 wheels?

I would love to do so but funds are tight right now and this is my daily driver so I need to get her fixed tomorrow....I am however going to upgrade it to disks when I start to do my list of mods to it!
Looks like my rt rear drum is rust-welded to the hub. Tried to loosen as well - NG. Explain the screwdriver pry method, please.
I just got a couple big flat head screw drivers and pryed the drum from the back side of the drum. I will get some pics for you tomorrow of how I did it. I really cant explain it that well....sorry

If it's fighting that badly to come off, you can bet you'll be replacing the guts anyway. Just force it off. If the pads keyed into the drums, it'll take the pads and springs off with it.
Still haven't even looked at the front brakes on my 63, I just got used to double pumping when I have to stop...

true but he should be able to adjust the brakes so they loosen up on the drum. If his brake adjuster is frozen like mine are then like you said he will have to pry them off. But his adjuster should loosen the pads up enough to where can get them off.

I think I'll soak it some first and then try to get it to loosen up before prying at it.
My dad used to put out the catalog for Southern States Coop and the 1st time he met the WD-40 sales rep, the rep came into his office spraying WD-40 all over his suit. The rep was saying, "this stuff is so great, it won't even stain my suit". My dad thought he was nuts, but eventually became a true believer himself (once fixed an A/C unit by spraying the starting cap terminals with WD-40...). HA!

WD is good for getting rid of moisture on electrical terminals, but it's crap for rust penetrating. Get yourself some PB Blaster for freeing rusted on drums. Way better than WD-40 for that application.
I've sprayed pb blaster into the adjuster hole right on the star adjuster wheel a few times let it set a while[a day or so]. then pried back and forth with a screw driver[ with the adjuster arm out of the way]. I've always had good luck doing it this way.If the adjuster wheel is loose on the back but the drum still won't come off I put a little heat to it out side of the axle that sticks through the drum.A screw driver between drum and backing plate helps with the prying. It works real well on a cold morning. Oh yes I sprayed around the lug bolts and at axle area and let them soak a while also . If you don't have any way to heat the drum, soaking and then prying and tapping with a hammer at the center of the drum around the axle area works. I just rebuilt all 4 of my brakes and put a 72 rear end under my 65 flairside.I learned a lot . I hope this will help you out some
