the gear on my window motor is stripped, not sure which one though. is it possible to get just a gear for the motor? or is it easier to just buy a whole new motor. And if its the regulator, what's the best way to go about replacing that?
Yes it's possible to get just a gear for the window motor, very easy to change too once you have the motor out of course. Probably not the regulator, but you'll have to deal with that when you get there.
Yes, you just remove a simple sort of snap ring with a pair of pliers, change gears and replace the snap ring. Very simple. It's been several years since I replaced one, but I would sure think Ford still provides the replacement gears.
Are the gears stripped for certain, or it just slipping and making noise?
It is likely the bushings inside the motor have been eaten up. Remove the motor from the door, and open up it up. If there are chunks of rubber/plastic everywhere, then you need new bushing. They can be found in the "Help" section of your local auto parts store.
X2 on the bushings. They are also referred to as "Torque Pins". I would be very surprised if its actually the gear stripped out. Also, while you have it apart, clean all the old grease and gunk out of the window track on the bottom of the window and lube it and the control arm up real good (I like white lithium grease) and you will be surprised how fast the window will go up and down.
