Rear End Swap Information

Hello all..I have an '84 F150 4.9 with SRod 8.8 Rear 2.47 gears...BREATHE.. oh yeah...and 235/75/15s (i'm going to 275/60 15's soon) BTW it's 2wd

Ok..now I'm looking at replacing the 2.47 with a used 8.8 with 3.08 ( haven't gotten it from the guy i'm trying to get as much info as possible)

he's selling it for about 100 bucks out of an 1983 F150 he also has a 9 inch but I don't know the gears

I"m looking at doign the swap myself..Now I know some things to check with the used rear..i.e slack..but what other things to I need to consider.

1. Good Questions to ask the seller..(he's a local guy)

2. I just recently had my whole brake system redone..new shoes/hardware in the rear..so I want to keep that stuff) the drum as also been turned..so the rear brakes that are on my current truck I need to keep.

Now..is it possible to take the drums off without having to pull out the hardware..i.e. pull the axles out..then take the drums off..swap the rear..or do I need to pull all that hardware out and then back in...

Any advice would be great...any resources online would be helpful..I've looked at both my chiltons/haynes manuals..and trying to figure out

Thanks all
JOhn

Going from 8.8 to a new 8.8, You will need to remove the drums as they cover all the brake components. You will then need to take off all the brake components on your old axle and then swap them over to the new axle.
If you were going from a 9" to a different 9" well, thats a different story, all you have to do in that case is swap the 3rd member.... ahhhh the beauty of a 9"

Yeah...one benefit of doing that..I almost thought of converting but it's just simpler for me to swap 8.8 for 8.8..Without removing the hardware (shoes/springs) can I move the internal brake/drum to the other axle..seems to me that I can but want to make sure

Any tips on pulling the axles out??
