What a thread!
1. Purchase: F350, Ext Cab, 4x4, diesel, long-bed, 6-spd
2. 40-ft 5th wheel RV and travel with the wife
3. Pay cash for Item 1 & 2
4. Go the to work the last day with the truck and camper
5. Clock out and flip the bird lol
New truck and 40 foot camper would be awesome!! But, it's over $100 grand out of pocket to drive off the lot. Now I add fuel at $3 a gallon and 10 MPG, insurance, lot rental and hook up fees, food and essentials, maintenance for the rig and any other day to day expenses. A year from now (GOD I hope not, just saying) I die. Wife can't use the 60 foot wonder train, has no income, and wants to be near the kids. She sells the truck and trailer for $50 grand, has to use it all to make a down payment on a house, and winds up owing more than she makes to keep the lights on.
My grandfather had this same idea. They had a lot of fun until he passed 3 years later. Now the family is supporting my grandma to make sure she keeps her home and her sense of independancy.
If it were me I would: Buy a trailer at the lake ($25,000), but a used SD ($15,000) and a used 20 foot travel trailer ($5000) to take a trip 3 or 4 times a year. At least that way you would have a home base to return to and have family over, have a place for the wife to call home and a toy for you both to share in your golden years.
No matter what you choose, and I'm positive I speak for EVERYONE here on the forums, I wish you good luck and a long, cancer free retirement with your wife. Post some pics and let us know how you're doing.
