When it rains it pours, er whats the equivalent to that in snow....?
I just had my winter tires put on and the shop told me that my rear brakes are shot.
Then I go to leave the shop and my starter makes a less than friendly noise as I was turning it over.....
It turned over as usual and then made like a "clack" sound and wasn't turning the engine anymore. I stopped and tried again and had no problem but I don't think that the "clack" sound is a good indication.
Is there a starter that everyone recommends or is OEM ok?
I replaced mine with a brand new Delco Remy, and I'm very happy so far.
I purchased a rebuilt first and it was defective, for $20 more I should have got the Delco the first time.
You could always buy the cheap one first, wait an hour and take it back with a story on how crappy it is, they may just give you the better one for the price of the lesser............................................ ..................
I wouldn't do anything like that, but I'm just saying.....
I bought mine from nappa and after the 3 one in a month I'm still not satisfied cause about once a day when I go to start my truck it goes shhhinggg. Very anoying. Sad thing is it was a brand new Mitsubishi starter and nappa won't refund only exchange. Next time I'll buy a super starter!
Ok, I found the reciept, and I was way off....I paid $80, and it was supposed to be $120.
Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking...I guess I got even a better deal with $40 off.
James, have you checked the starter bolts? They may have come loose and you may not need to replace the starter yet. Make sure to check those bolts before you damage your flywheel.
Because you brought up the loose bolts on the starter that reminds me some of the starters have 2 bolts and some have 3. What's odd is that the belhousing is made for the 3 bolts even if the truck only came with a 2 bolt starter. With that said I always install the 3 bolt starter when it needs to be replaced. I've never had the bolts back out of a 3 bolt starte but have had them back out on a
2 bolt starter causing issues like you described. Good call bob. By the way I believe denso makes the super starter. If you search it on here skysky Jason has one and speaks highly of it.
A little Lock-Tite is your friend. I've learned that here as I was one that always just tightened things up by hand and feel and walked away. I was lucky all those years but now I have a tube of the stuff in my box.
Ok, so it wasn't the starter bolts, it was the actual starter.
The bad news is that NAPA charges $300 for it here in Canada.
The good news is that the truck starts amazingly!
I guess that things do wear out, the timing on this one could have been a little better though.
Thanks guys for all the input and help on the matter.
Glad to hear there wasn't any more damage from the loose bolts. At least they had one. I'd bet a bad starter could leave you in a pinch in those cold climates.
That was my biggest concern Bulla. I'm going to be away from home for January and February and I did not want to get caught with a dead starter!!!! Well I should be good to go now for hopefully another 7 years.
