4 speed shifter rattling
I need some technical help. I recently purchased a '64 F250 4x4 with 6 cyl. and 4 speed floor shifter. Truck runs and shifts great, but I've noticed that there is ALOT of play in the shifter. When I get going in 4th gear the shifter rattles back and forth. I know it's a truck , but noise is bothersome. Is there a way to take some of the play out of shifter?

I'm actually looking for some guidance with this tranny as well. I have a bit of trouble getting her into 3rd lately. A bit grindy. Anyone have some suggestions for adjustments that can be made (clutch, shifter, etc).
As for that rattle, I assume it's just cuz the thing is nearly 40 years old and live with it. However, mine may not be as bad as yours either!
To check your shifter knuckle, pull the boot. The shifter has only one big locker nut holding it in place. Loosen it. There is a little pin that locks the shifter in. SLide that out (don't loose it or break it) and out she'll come. Then you can inspect the knuckle for wear.
By the way, my limited knowledge comes with a caveat...
this is what I did for my T-98 four speed...proceed at your own risk!!
Thanks for help. Sounds like we have/had similar problem. I'll take her apart this weekend and look for wear as you suggested. Noise isn't unbearable, just bugs me!
I don't have any grinding on third gear (unless I miss shift and accidently try for reverse!) so can't help much there.
