Just thought I would let everyone in on a problem I ran in to when installing sending units for my gauge pod.
I installed the water and tranny temp, along with the oil pressure gauges.
Based on some of the reading I did on this board and elsewhere, I used the Permatex #014 thread sealant w/ Teflon. Well, 3 weeks later, and after 3 different attempts, all of the senders were leaking, especially the tranny.
After reading the fine print on the back of the tube, I realized that it said to not use near heat. I also noticed that the goop seemed to start bubbling when the engine got hot.
Today, I went to the auto parts store, and found some High Temperature thread sealant w/ Teflon from Permatex. It comes in a small tube, about a 1/3 of the size of the other.
I removed all 3 sending units, applied the new sealant, and NO LEAKS!!!!
Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to pass this along to anyone else looking at installing gauges.
I build race engines and have had the same problem with the lower spec Permatex. Not only did it leak near heat, it leaked everywhere. Don't know exactly what that stuff is supposed to seal. The hi-temp Permatex thread sealer with teflon works fairly well. I've had good luck with it. Check it often though for awhile, I have had leaks develop over time.
I am glad you posted this, I picked up some permatex and Ampsoil last week to do my diff fluid change this week, I don't want any fluids leaking out of my rear end!! HeeHee! I am going to check the temp on the permatex tonight when I get home. I don't know how much heat the diff puts out but for $9.95 a quart on the ampsoil and the cost of a a new diff, it's worth buying the higher temp permatex.
Bryan, what is the Permatex item number on the tubes of the sealant you used. I did my senders quite a while ago and I don't believe I have any leaks. I'll be checking again though after reading your post. The one I used is Permatex Thread Sealant with Silicone, item #80631 14A I bought it in a 1 oz tube. Thx.
Any chance you could show exactly where you did your sending unit connections. A pic or something?
I'm planning on pyrometer, oil pressure and tranny temp. I'm having trouble picturing how to do the sending unit connections. A link to detailed instructions would be fine, if you know of one.
If you go to http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/apillar.htm Stan has pictures of the sending unit locations. I used the same locations as him. If you have additional questions, I'd be glad to help you out. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on the link to go to the sender installation pics.
Quikirk,
If you go to the site I listed above, you will see the tube of sealant that I originally used. I think it is the same as you mentioned. I will check the item # on the new sealant and post it tomorrow...
I have a question on this topic. I am planning in installing a tranny gauge in the spring and plan on using the port on the transmisison. I was wondering, when you remove the plug from the tranny, does any fluid come out, if so how much? If fluid comes out, how do you dry it out. I would assume that the threads must be dry for the sealer to work correctly?
Secondly, someone mentioned that their sender was too long. I am installing an SPA dual gauge and was wondering how long is too long on the sender? I would like to know if my sender is going to be too long before i try to install it.
Regarding the tranny fluid= Yes, as soon as you remove the plug from the side of the tranny, fluid will start to come out. It won't be pouring out, just running down the side of the tranny, hopefully into a drain pan or towel.
Here is what I did. Get the sending unit ready with the thread sealant, and just do the quick "switcharoo"!!! Pull out the plug, and put the sending unit in. You will loose very little fluid. It's ok if some of the fluid gets on the threads while putting it in.
Regarding sender length- I put in the AutoMeter gauges in mine, and the sending unit did not bottom out. I have read other posts where different sending units did bottom out, but I don't remember the brand.
