I think you can buy a kit from ford that replaces everything. I think it was around $100, but it included everything you'd need to replace the handle, linkage, lock mechanism, etc.
When I took mine apart I found that that the stretched out cable had made everything else out of whack...
That was my problem also. Easy fix.
I removed the inside door pull lever and mechnism.
You will see a cable. I twisted that cable in the way it spirals. It took a few rotations.
Then carefully put it all back together.
Presto! problem solved for free. That has been a few years ago and it is still just fine.
