Stupid question ?

I have a 1984 F-150 w/ AOD. My question is which gear is the best for city/town driving ? This is my first overdrive tranny and I do not know which to select. Do I use the first D encircled in white or do I use the next selection of a plain D ? I know that the third D is low gear and used only when pulling a giant grade or for heavy towing. Sorry this seems so simple but quite frustrating when you don't know. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. At present I use the D encircled in white but am not sure if this is correct.

I don't know much about the AOD but I'll do what I can...

On the gear indicator, what are the letters and/or numbers? I have an AOD gear indicator in my truck (came with a gauge cluster I installed, my transmission is a C6, non-overdrive) and it says P R N (D) D 1, with (D) being the encircled D you mentioned. I think some later trucks had (D), D and D1, but I'm not sure.

For what it's worth, I would just leave it in (D). (D) is automatic operation of all forward gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th [overdrive]). If you're not going fast enough for the transmission to automatically shift into 4th, then it'll just stay in 3rd.

EDIT: K_nine summed up my big post in a single sentence. lol

As k_nine said, just leave it in the OD position and don't worry about it unless in a
situation where it shifts back and forth between OD and 3rd. Such a situation as this
might occur when going up a mountain road.

Stupid question ?

Wow guys, that was fast !! Thanks for the info. I have been driving in the apparent over drive so from what you say that is the right selection. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question and in such a timely manner. If I can ever be of assistance to anyone I won't hesitate to answer the best that I can. I guess that is all any of us can do. lol Thanks again for the help. MM

Forgot to say that I have a 1984 F-150 with a C-6 tranny w/overdrive. I drive with it in (D) unless it isn't doing right then I shift down to the D selection.

Just to add,

If you are towing or hauling something heavy, leave it in D, without the circle. This is advise from the owners manual.

Going down a long steep grade, shift it into one of the lower gears. D or 1.

C6 didnt have OD, you probably have an AOD judging by your shift indicator
