Hi, Big Dave here, has anyone had any crome powercoat done? Had a guy here in AL. told me he could power coat in chrome color, thinking about having my grill and headlight trim done woundering how it looks,Thanks
I do powdercoating at my shop. It looks good when it comes out of the oven but when the clear coat is applied it tends to get a little duller. It will not replace real chrome but looks more like anodized aluminium. Welcome to FTE Dave. I'm pretty new here as well.
I had some valve covers done (aluminum) that wound up looking somewhere between polished aluminum and chrome. It won't fool you into believing it's chrome, but it looked darn nice.
I was wondering how it would work on wheels, I know Michael Waltrip Racing runs them on all their race cars. I have some old Jeep wheels on my truck that is slowly being taken over with the rust.
A couple of months ago there was an ad on the OKC Craig's List. A shop over the south side advertized a "spray on chrome" with some pics of some of their work. It looked REAL good but, I've been trying to justify the gas money to go down and cast my baby blue eyes on it to see how it looks up close. Tom
It will work if there is a LOT of good surface prep. I have a local shop that I frequent that does it and they have turned out some pretty darn nice looking results. It is not quite as good as real chrome plating, but it can look very nice.
It holds up very well on wheels, but as said, it's not as bright and shiny as chrome, looks a lot more like polished aluminum. I really considered getting my Lightning wheels done with it, but ended up refinishing them close to the stock silver metallic.

For how much? I was contemplating painting mine an aluminum silver and doing the steel bumpers as well. I looking into plating the grill and the fine folks around want $300...
I asked on the paint & body forum; about if anybody powdercoated a oil bath top section of a air breather; I'm worried about the filter inside the container, getting to much heat?
Anybody shot that part yet?
I though about black chrome both the breather & valve covers.
WIth regards to the aluminum anodized grille, told by plater it's best to chrome a steel grille explaining the alum is a soft material and any dent, nick, etc., from road debre would be more pronounce, probly why don't see too many alum grilles, headlamp, and/or turn signal trim chromed. Not sure if it would apply to powder coating although I would think it very simular. Not sure it would matter if don't intend driving the truck on a regular basis, happen to have saved my 65 steel grille in event decide to go that route.

Powder coating is baked at about 400 degrees. I wouldn't worry about the engine heat damaging it other than discoloration. I was told that the heat from the engine will make the powdercoat lose it's shine and turn dull. Maybe if you used a flat finish instead of shiny it would probably be fine.
