How much will empty trailer affect mileage?
I know there are variables such as v-nose or not, I just would like figure out if it is going to cost me $50 extra in fuel or $500, as I have no idea how much it is going to lower mpg's.
I am currently living in Georgia and in a few months have to move from here to Phoenix and then to Los Angeles and then to Washington.
I won't need the trailer until Phoenix where I have a king size bed to pick up, but, there are a few companies here in Georgia that sell enclosed trailers for around 5k. That is why I am wondering how much more it would cost me to drag an empty trailer from Georgia, versus picking one up in Phoenix. Phoenix has tons of used trailers for sale on craigslist, but I will only be there for a couple of days so I might be rushed to find a good one.
11 mpgs is will say 209 gals @ 3.50= $731 bucks
A difference of 619 dollars if you just bought it there.
Then there is the licensing and insurance to consider.
Everything points to making a u-haul trailer reservation in Phoenix. Don't buy the trailer unless you are gonna use and use it alot.
Problem is from Los Angeles to Washington I need to take half of a two car garage worth of stuff, plus a room stuffed with stuff. A couple of roll around toolchests, welders, bandsaw, compressor, a couple of motorcycles, etc., etc.
It pretty much filled up a 27 foot uhaul to get it there from Phoenix.
I haven't been able to find any 20ft and up trailer rentals.
I used a U-Haul auto transport for my 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe from Southern California to Folsom, CA; dropped that off at Mom's place then picked up a 1977 Chevy K20 from my Dad; (we met along the interstate between CA and NV) to take to Idaho. The trucks tires wouldn't fit inside the hold-downs and had to swap to a tow bar. Had to wait for U-Haul to bring it out.
Sounds like your overall trip will require two loads.
My brother paid a transport company over $500 (several years ago) to transport Grandma's car from my place in ID to his place in MI because his little Chevy Blazer bottomed out after hooking up the auto transport with Grandma's car loaded.
More food for thought.
